When Billie Eilish is the topic of conversation, most people can assume it is nothing but praise. The 18-year-old breakout artist, has been in the public eye since 2016 when her song Ocean Eyes went viral. Ever since then, she has done nothing but keep up with demand. Although most her songs tend to catch the attention of the public, her single Therefore I am, that was released earlier this month, can easily be cast as the most important song of her career so far.
Fans suggest that the song is a reaction to the online hysteria over photos released of the singer in tight fitting clothes. Eilish is known for wearing baggy oversized clothes, the singer in her ad campaign for Calvin Klein explained her reasons for wearing these specific clothing items.
“Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like, ‘she’s slim-thick,’ ‘she’s not slim-thick,’ ‘she’s got a flat ass,’ ‘she’s got a fat ass.’ No one can say any of that because they don’t know.”
— Billie Eilish
In her new song Eilish uses her talent to confront haters and quotes famous philosopher René Descartes from 1637 in her chorus — “Cogito ergo sum” which translates to the songs title Therefore I Am. Releasing this song would have definitely been a struggle for the young artist, as she has expressed in past interviews her problems and struggles with fame and social media standards. In the song she addresses these issues and what causes her stress as a young female icon. As Eilish is only 18 years old she is a role model to many young girls and women, so she uses her platform to and music to send messages to her audience. Therefore I am is a song that radiates confidence and self-assurance, lyrics in the verses as well as chorus create this energy in the song.
“Don’t talk ’bout me like how you might know how I feel, top of the world, but your world isn’t real, your world’s an ideal”
These lyrics are in the first verse and the songs underlying message can be understood if one hears the song enough times. In my opinion, I think these lyrics highlights Billie Eilish’s thoughts on todays beauty and social standards. In these three lines she explains how society creates standards for women and cause people to think women should look and act a certain way. As a young woman, I can identify with this concept and could read between the lines when looking at the lyrics. The song is an important single that truly reveals the entrenched flaws in the 21st Century.
Overall the song is written thoughtfully and was executed faultlessly, the lyrics explained what it wanted to and the music in the background fit in nicely. Like many of her other songs I can hear it on repeat and enjoy each part every time. The song is upbeat yet informative, a perfect combination for her young fans.
