Little Mix member Jesy Nelson takes the decision to leave the group to focus on her mental health
After starting out as a makeshift girl group on the X Factor, Little Mix quickly took the world by storm and gained mass fandom all around the world. Now nine years on, Little Mix’s fandom has been deeply saddened after the recent announcement that fundamental member Jesy Nelson has decided to leave the group.
The devastating news comes after Nelson was absent from many of the group’s recent appearances and it was then that fans began to speculate if Nelson would ever join the girls again. In what no one knew would be her final months in the group, Nelson had been appearing alongside her fellow band members Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock on their BBC talent show The Search, in which the group searched the UK for the next big band and the grand prize would be to support the insanely talented Little Mix on their next world tour. However, as the show came to a close, Nelson was missing. It was announced via the group’s Twitter page that she was unwell and unable to appear. This, in turn, meant that she would also be unable to host or perform at the MTV EMAs (European Music Awards). Many fans feared that Jesy had possibly contracted Covid-19, sadly no one could have guessed it would lead to the quartet to reduce to a trio.
Jesy hasn’t hidden her struggles with her mental health and after being plunged into a world of stardom it isn’t hard to imagine why. In her documentary with the BBC, Nelson highlighted the negative impact social media can have on a person’s mental health and also spoke about her own struggles with online ‘trolls’ who picked her apart relentlessly. In the heart-breaking documentary, Nelson opened up and told the world about her attempts to take her own life and how being in the public eye wasn’t what she had anticipated it would be. In her online announcement regarding her departure, Nelson stated: “I find the constant pressure of being in a girl group and living up to expectations very hard.” Although sad, it is relieving that Nelson is taking the right steps to focus on her mental health and general well-being, leaving the group was the best decision.
Nelson didn’t take the decision lightly, it was after much consideration and with a “heavy heart” that she broke the news to her fans and friends. Nelson has had an incredible nine years with Little Mix and she never hid the fact that it was a difficult journey. Nelson’s strength is a great inspiration to young fans all over the world and many look up to her as a role model. She battled through many tough times but never let them break her stride. This is highlighted after the group went on to sell out shows all over the world and win numerous awards such as the well renowned ‘Brit’ which I’m sure Jesy will treasure forever.
The unfortunate news brought Little Mix fans to rally online and show their support for Nelson. Many fans have posted that their love for Nelson will never fade and that they fully support her with her future endeavours whatever they may be. Nelson isn’t sure what her future will look like but is extremely grateful for the love that fans have shown her in the past. She said, “To every single fan who came to see us in concert, who listened to our songs and sung their hearts out, sent me messages and supported me along the way I want you to know I love you all so much and I could never have done this without you, and I appreciate it endlessly.”
Although a member short, Little Mix have assured fans that they will continue to perform and are “looking forward to seeing so many of you on tour.” Perrie, Jade and Leigh-Anne are grateful for the loyalty of their fans and share the same devastation as them. Nelson will forever and always be a member of Little Mix and all fans send their support to her at this time.
